The Pearl of the Gospel

Jesus’ new commandment is one of the cardinal points of the Focolare spirituality: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (Jn. 13:34). The new commandment is one of those wondrous gifts that Jesus “held hidden in his heart” only to reveal them on the last day of his life on earth.
For Chiara Lubich, the great discovery here lies in the words “As I have loved you” and in the fact that Jesus commands that this love be mutual.
But once we summon the courage to take that step – “each person in his or her own way” – we too will discover the pearl of the gospel, the unique and most precious treasure of our life. It will be most pleasing to God and bring the life of God among us, allowing us to carry out God’s greatest pleasure.
